FLOGA:
Parents Association of children with cancer
Floga is an association of parents with children that happened to become sick with cancer. The association embraces thousands of families around Greece. Today 30 years since its foundation, Floga has representatives with opulent activity in the largest cities of the country.
• It supports parents during the phase of diagnosis.
Mothers that their children have won the fight against cancer as well as cured
children-now adults- from the youth team visit the hospitals and Floga’s house
to stand by parents and children during the difficult phase of diagnosis. This
way they can provide an undisputable live proof that these kids, also stand a
good chance at being cured.
• It provides accommodation to parents and children from regional Greece. In a building of 1,000 square meters, which was built from large to small donations of friends and sponsors, families from regional Greece as well as Albania are provided with accommodation for the duration of their mandatory stay in Athens. The building which was inaugurated by the President of the Greek Republic in November of 2002, is located in a walking distance from the pediatric hospitals and offers excellent free accommodation. The children there, are offered support from specialized psychologists and social workers, so their overall psychological state, maximizes the benefits of their therapy. Floga also provides school classes (kindergarten, elementary and high school education) with teachers and professors, provided for by the Ministry of Education.
• It owns suitably equipped vans to comfortably and securely transport children to public hospitals or to any other medical exam center.
• It participates in providing medical and other equipment as well as funding the improvement of medical care facilities in public hospitals. In October of 2005 Floga covered at 100% the cost for renovating the Oncology Department of St Sophia children’s Hospital. Also, just recently Floga purchased a Bio-molecular Analyzer for the General Pathology and Path. Anatomy laboratory of the Medical School of Arisotelion University in Thessaloniki, which will help in better diagnosing and treating both children and adults.
• It tries with continuous appeals at the Federal Government to awaken them into improving the medical care for children with cancer.
• It provides financial support to cover for the immediate needs of the financially weaker families.
• It finances additional medical tests for children in cases that their attending physician prescribes them and their insurance provider does not cover them.
• It organizes concerts, charity bazaars, blood donations, festivals for the purpose of entertaining the children and sells its own Christmas cards to support these programs.
• It participates in the ICCCPO’s (International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organizations) activities, as one of the founding members in which 64 more countries are also participating.
• BUT MOSTLY it tries to inform people about childhood cancer and to eliminate prejudice. Cancer is not hereditary and is not contagious. Childhood cancer does not necessarily mean death. It is not an accursed, but a serious, life threatening for the child disease, that needs time and specialized treatment.
